The Five Pillars of Islam

In Islam there are five pillars which the Qur’an states are the framework for worship and a sign of commitment to the faith.


1)      The Shahadah (creed): “I testify that there is no God except God and I testify that Muhammad is the one true messenger of God”
·         This is the foundation for all other beliefs and practices of Islam

2)      Salat (prayer:)) A Muslim must pray five times a day and face Mecca
·         is intended to help the mind focus on God and is seen as a communication with God showing your gratitude and worship of him

3)      Almsgiving (zakah):Must give a small percentage of their earnings to charity, or rather, as              “alms”
·         Brings hearts together, freeing people from the shackles of financial debt and aiding travellers


4)      Fasting: During Ramadan, no food or drink shall enter the body from dawn to dusk
·         The fast is meant to encourage a sense of closeness to God

5)      Pilgrimage to Mecca: During a Muslim’s life it is mandatory for them to go to Mecca, Muhammad’s birthplace
·         Must perform ritual of Hajj: walk seven times around the Kaaba, walk seven times between Mt. Safa and MT. Marwah and recounts the steps of Abraham’s wife while she was in search of water in the desert of Mecca

These five pillars are mandatory acts of worship and followings of Islamic law which impacts every facet of life and society. These five pillars give guidance on vast areas of life; money, war, environment, everyday human interaction, etc.
